An immersive experience following in the footsteps of the Vikings

The Immersive City of Rouen offers a deep dive into history with a new museum experience dedicated to the epic world of the Vikings. The journey transports visitors to the 9th century, blending immersive experiences with an exhibition of historical artifacts. Our team had the honor of being entrusted with the mission to create the video content for the Room of Dreams, a jewel within the museum. Visitors are invited to discover the life of the Vikings through 5 segments, each telling a thematic story:

  • The life of Rollon, the illustrious Viking leader
  • The story of William the Conqueror, Rollon’s great-great-grandson
  • The history of the Normans of Sicily
  • The explorers who preceded Rollon
  • The Edda, a collection of Viking mythology

This journey through time and space takes visitors into a world that is both familiar and novel. Between history and legend, in the heart of Normandy, the spectator is immersed in a poetic and fantastical adventure, highlighting the pride and strong sense of belonging inherent to the Vikings.

Artistic Approach:

Our artistic approach aims to capture the essence of the Viking era while infusing a touch of poetry and mystery. Each set, segment, and interlude has its own graphic universe, using a carefully chosen color palette to reflect history and myth: the misty atmosphere and light play a crucial role, serving as links between the different scenes. The scenographic layout and marked depth of field allow visitors to be immersed in varied and captivating environments. Through a refined dramaturgy, each visual element is designed to accentuate the historical aspect and the emotions felt by the spectators, while telling the story of this people in an exciting way, suitable for all generations.

Technical Approach

To bring this immersive experience to life, we opted for a combination of 2D and 3D techniques. The 3D illustrations add dreamlike and stylized tableaux to the journey, creating more realistic and almost tangible environments. The backbone of the main decor relies on a diversity of atmospheres, mixing historical, architectural, and epic elements. Thanks to motion capture on actors (mocap), we were able to create charismatic characters that are close to realism, making each scene more vivid and authentic. The use of these techniques allows visitors to be transported on a journey through time, where the intangible heritage of the Vikings becomes almost tangible.
